Every year Muslims all around the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with full enthusiasm and joy. It is an occasion that brings people closer and spreads happiness everywhere. In other words, it is a gift from God for all Muslims after observing fasts for 29 to 30 days.
However, the celebration of this festival starts after the sighting of the Shawwal moon. This festival has different celebrations styles, like giving Eidi to the younger ones and greeting people inside the masjids. Meanwhile, people host dinners at their place and distribute sweets in the neighborhood.
However, the celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr are not restricted to relatives and friends only. Muslims also give Fitrana (a specific amount of money) to the needy and deserving people to help them in every possible way.
What is Fitrana?
It is a charitable donation given by the Muslims to the needy people before offering the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer. That Fitrana is the responsibility of the head of a family as only he is eligible to do so.
Fitrana calculations:
The amount of Fitrana per person is equivalent to around 2.6kg of wheat, dates, rice, barley, or any other dry fruit.
Zakat for the needy people:
Zakat is another way to help deserving and poor people. By giving Zakat, Muslims purify their souls. Hence, this Zakat (a religious tax) applies to Muslims according to their wealth. This annual payment, also known as Zakat, is one of the five pillars of Islam.
List of the People Eligible for Zakat:
- The poor or the needy ones.
- Zakat collectors.
- Those who are in debt can take Zakat.
- To reconcile hearts.
- Zakat can be paid to free slaves.
- The people who are fighting for a religious creed and the travelers.
Zakat calculations:
Around 2.5% of Zakat is fixed on the total wealth of the person’s income. But a person is eligible for Zakat only when he has 7.5 tolas of gold or 52.5 tolas of silver or equivalent monetary value.
Difference between Zakat and Fitrana:
These both things serve the same purpose, but they both are a bit different from each other. The Zakat is an amount given to the needy according to the fixed rate. However, the Fitrana is an advance fixed amount.
